St. Mary's East Eden
APPENDIX B
Parish Council Committees and Committee Roles

Sample Agenda For A Council Meeting:

  1. Meaningful Opening Prayer Service - This should be prepared in advance of every meeting.  The preparation of this prayer service should be assigned to an individual member of the committee. The preparation of the opening prayer service should be rotated among individual members or committees so that each has the opportunity to lead this service.  Participation in the service as readers etc., should also rotate.  At least one half hour should be dedicated for prayer service.  Occasional meetings may begin with a Eucharistic liturgy.
  2. Instructional Period - It is important for a council to stimulate the continued spiritual growth of its members and parish community.  Accordingly, time should be scheduled during the council year for speakers and/or discussions on various topics of faith, Church life and social justice.  It is recognized that this cannot be done at every meeting but should occur at specific times during the council year. (This is viewed primarily for council members but may be open to the entire parish community)
  3. Minutes of prior meeting and correspondence sent and received - Minutes should be made and kept on file of all council meetings.  This will be of invaluable assistance to subsequent councils.
  4. Reports - to be made by all permanent and ad hoc committees. This is necessary for a continuing evaluation of the needs of the parish and the success or weakness of the parish program/mission/pastoral plan.
  5. Old Business  A review of past events of parish calendar.  Any old business drawn from past agenda and minutes may be discussed.
  6. New Business
  7. Evaluation of parish programs/mission/pastoral plan.
  8. Not all of these elements (other than #1) need be included in every meeting.
