How will I benefit from the Sacrament of Penance?
Jesus spoke of ten of how God constantly invites the
lost, the separated and sinners to share in his divine life. Those
who celebrate this sacrament benefit by sharing in the joy of that life, t
which Christ invites all people.
How Do
I prepare for the Sacrament of Penance?
Your preparation for the sacrament involves an examination of
conscience in which you reflect on your sins in light of God's mercy.
The priest is always ready to guide someone through the celebration of the
sacrament, especially when the person is not sure that to do.
How do I know whether something I have done is
a sin?
The word of God in the Bibl, along with the teaching and the laws of
the Church, offer guidance to help people recognize the presence of sin in
their lives. Priests and parish staff are always available to speak
with you and help you reflect on whether or not something in your life is
sinful. Sometimes penitents benefit from making an appointment to
speak with someone before they decide to participate int he sacrament of
penance.
Why am I asked to confess my sins to
a Priest?
God offers forgiveness and compassion to all who express sorrow for
their sins. In every sacrament, the deeper spiritual reality is
symbolized through some visible, tangible sing, like the water or baptism,
for example. In reconciliation, penitents experience God's
forgiveness through confession sins aloud to a priest and through the
prayer of absolution, with the priest extending a hand over or toward the
penitent. The priest acts in the name of Christ and the church,
showing God's mercy and compassion. God's forgiveness comes to us
through this holy dialogue.
What If I Do Not Want the Priest To
Know Who I Am?
Most parishes provide a room or chapel for the sacrament of
reconciliation, where penitents may either knell behind a screen and
remain anonymous or sit face-to-face with the priest.
When Can I Participate in the
Sacrament of Penance?
Most parishes provide regular weekly times for the individual
celebration of the sacrament. Mary parishes also celebrate communal
penance at certain times of the year, such as Advant or Lent.
